Nicknamed “The Bear”, Denny Hulme was a Formula One World Champion from New Zealand who won the Drivers’ Title in 1967. He is New Zealand’s only Formula 1 World Champion and the only other racing driver from the country to have a won a Formula One Grand Prix other than Bruce McLaren, whose team he raced for between 1968 and 1974. Hulme won a total of 8 Grands Prix and claimed 1 pole position. He also won the Can-Am title twice, in 1968 and 1970. He died in October 1992 after suffering a heart attack while contesting the Bathurst 1000 in a BMW M3 in Australia.
