Didier Pironi was a French F1 driver who raced in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship between 1978 and 1982. He won 3 Grands Prix and claimed 4 pole positions during his short career and looked set to win the World Championship with Ferrari in 1982 before he suffered career ending injuries in a horrific crash during warm-up for the 1982 German Grand Prix. He subsequently took up offshore powerboat racing but was killed in an accident during the Needles Trophy in August 1987.
