John Surtees was a British Formula One World Champion who won the Drivers’ Title with Ferrari in 1964. During his career “Big John”, as he was known, won a total of 6 Grands Prix and claimed 8 pole positions. He was a double winner of the German Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix and also won the Sebring 12 Hours for Ferrari in 1963 and the Can-Am title in 1966. Prior to Formula 1, he had achieved huge success racing motorcycles and remains the only man to have won the world title on 4 wheels and 2 wheels. After he stopped racing, he formed his own racing outfit Team Surtees which was active in Formula 1 between 1970 and 1978. At the age of 83, Surtees died in a London Hospital from natural causes. His son Henry had very sadly predeceased him after he was killed in an FIA Formula 2 Championship race at Brands Hatch in July 2019.
