The 1990 Spanish Grand Prix was Round 14 of the 1990 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The event was held in Jerez, Spain on Sunday, 30 September 1990. Ayrton Senna started on pole position in the McLaren Honda and Alain Prost was the race winner for Ferrari.
Martin Donnelly was seriously injured during practice on Friday when the suspension on his Lotus Lamborghini 102 failed, causing him to crash heavily at Turn 14. Donnelly was thrown out from the wreckage of his disintegrated car onto the track and he sustained serious injuries to his right leg which effectively ended his Formula One career. Although Martin did test a Jordan Hart at Silverstone in early 1993, he never took part in another Grand Prix or major international race again. An F1TV documentary entitled “Martin Donnelly: Man On The Edge” looks back at the crash and Donnelly’s subsequent recovery.
