1994 Monaco Grand Prix

The 1994 Monaco Grand Prix was Round 4 of the 1994 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The event was held on the streets of Monte Carlo on Sunday, 15 May 1994. Michael Schumacher started on pole position in the Benetton Ford and was the race winner.

Karl Wendlinger suffered a serious head injury during the first Free Practice Session on Thursday when he crashed his Sauber Mercedes sideways into a wall at nearly 170mph after losing control under braking for the Nouvelle Chicane. The accident knocked Wendlinger unconscious and he was in a coma for several weeks. Although he recovered fully from his injuries, he took no further part in the 1994 F1 season and did not race again until the 1995 Brazilian Grand Prix. Following Wendlinger’s accident, Sauber withdrew his team-mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen from the event.

A minute’s silence was held immediately before the race in honour of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna who had both been killed at the previous championship round at Imola.
